US Maritime Traffic

Every AIS transponder ping in US waters over one January day in 2023: nearly sixteen thousand vessels, from container ships in the Houston Ship Channel to fishing fleets in the Gulf and ferries on Puget Sound.

Each vessel is a world-space dot with a 30-minute comet wake — past pings fade and shrink behind the moving head, so shipping lanes emerge without any line geometry. Dots are sized in meters, not pixels: zoom into a harbor and vessels grow to their physical footprint.

The air-traffic twin of this demo — a day of US flights as moving heads, or the same day as full trajectories — streams from the fullscreen viewer.
